What has Ship 911 been up to?
Buffalo River Canoe Trip
From June 8th to June 16th Ship 911 went on an amazing adventure with Ship 1407. Ship 911 canoed down the Buffalo River in Arkansas! They traveled over 70 miles in 5 days. Scouts that went say they had an amazing time, and learned a lot too (especially to double bag their food). They even got to see the graceful flight of a bald eagle, truly, an amazing experience.
Here is a more in-depth report from Logan Vessel, our Boatswain:
Paddling wasn’t as tiring as it was when I went down the Ozarks. It was a fairly calm trip on the river, (when we weren’t being swallowed up by trees!) Some fast-paced areas needed more paddling moves than a forward & backward stroke though!
Camping for a few days was hard cause the first two spots were on the rocks. The rest of the time though was on sand or in the grass for the last two! The area didn’t get too hot, but it definitely wasn’t cold! We all appreciated having one spot where we could just sit at a pavilion for dinner and breakfast!
At Buffalo River, you’ll see interesting landmarks, like when we were trying to find a skull on the side of a cliff, we ended up finding the wrong one, there’s two! Not to mention, we found a wooden structure that looked like someone made a home out of! But besides mistaking landmarks and finding makeshift shelters, it’s a beautiful place to canoe through, with tall cliffs, hanging branches from big trees, etc. Also, we learned that Daniel is a pro rock skipper. (No, seriously if there was a tournament or something, he would win.)
A few that haven’t canoed before have probably learned how much physical activity that goes into canoeing, what to think about, and what to prepare for. We also learned how to make really nice meals while in the middle of nowhere, just wished we didn’t have river stroganoff... Some people like me learned new card games as well, learned more about each other, and enjoyed the trip in its entirety. (except for the time where Emma & I lost our phone…)
Summer Solstice Sailing Day
On June 21st Ship 911 had a recruitment event for summer solstice to celebrate the start of summer! Scouts got to sail on some sunfish and kayak. They also made s'mores and hotdogs. They had a great time and were able to teach some new recruits about sea scouts!
Small Boat Sailing Merit Badge Weekend W/ Troop 358 & 258
On June 28th through the 30th Ship 911 showed troop 358 and 258 the ropes of Small Boat Sailing so they could earn their Merit Badge. It was a great experience for both the troops and Ship 911, as it reinforced and helped them understand the content better. A great event all the way around!
Aviation Academy
Most recently, Ship 911 took a course for the Aviation Merit Badge! It was an informative two-day event! Scouts say they learned a lot more about aviation. One scout even took it so far as to sign up for flight school lessons!
